The editorial board requires a fair, honest, and unbiased assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript. Examples of unethical practice maybe if
- The Editor-In-Chief may directly ask an author to cite his papers in the manuscript.
- Editorial board member insists the author to cite the previously published papers in that journal. The type of demand for citations to previous journal content as a condition for publication. - Citation cartels (also called citation stacking) also happen. That is collusion across journals to inflate each other's citations. However, this can happen to a journal editor unknowingly - for instance, an author could also be an associate editor of Journal A, and include in their paper submitted to Journal B several gratuitous references to Journal A. |
